COMMITTEE
SPECIAL SESSION
April 25, 2005
John Monnat stated he received a request to hold a special meeting of the
Committee to make a decision concerning equipment for the Philmont trip.
A representative of the Philmont group presented this proposal to Committee:
(this equipment is needed for the Philmont trip)
Proposal: The Troop buy the gear listed for backpacking campouts.
This equipment would be used to train Scouts on the proper use of the
equipment.
Water filters 3 at $170 each $510
Light-weight stoves 3 at $120 each $360
Water purification tablets 10 at $13 per bottle $130
Fuel bottles 6 at $10 each $60
Medical kits 2 at $80 each $160
Total $1220
Discussion ensued as to whether the Troop should pay for equipment that would
solely be used for Philmont, why those going to Philmont had not implemented
fundraisers to pay for equipment and other costs, if Troop should pay for all
the equipment listed, and how active Scouts going were in the Troop.
Response to this discussion included: the Troop would be able to utilize most
of the equipment purchased for Troop education, backpacking trips, FCE and future
Philmont trips; Troop trailer needs a better medical kit instead of Doug
bringing his personal kit to Troop campouts; flag subscriptions initially set
up to go towards offsetting cost of Philmont travel; most Scouts going are
older Scouts and have contributed to the Troop in the past; these type of trips
encourage the older Scouts to stay active in the Troop.
Denise made a motion to approve $1000 of Troop funds to be used to purchase the
equipment. Troop 452 would keep the equipment purchased after Philmont.
This motion was seconded. Discussion ensued as to why not approve $1220,
suggested Scouts going needed to make an effort to raise some of the
money. Committee approved this motion with one dissenting vote.
Committee stated it would like to see the Philmont group implement a fundraiser
to offset cost.
